Found Sound, Found Music, Assemblage and Performance
This assignment is designed to engage you with sound and music in a new way. Through the steps of this project (note the website is still changing so just focus on the assigned section for each day) you will listen deeply, observe, experiment, test, collect, and create/decorate a musical instrument. Through the steps you will submit sound recordings via google classroom, google docs responding to videos, as well as pictures documenting your progress and creation. My hope is that for the culminating project you will get to collaborate with your classmates performPlease ask questions in our virtual sessions if you need clarification on a daily assignment.

INSPRIRING INSRUMENTS:
Musical instruments are often decorative and embellished beyond what makes them functional. For this project you will not only make a functional musical instrument, but you will give it an interesting appearance.
Most of us are probably pretty familiar with western instruments, those used in the classical symphony, jazz, and even rock...but have you seen these interesting instruments from around the world?

Have you considered instruments played by nature, or chance? What about instruments that merge with public sculpture or site specific art?
THE TASK: These links provide only a slice of the really interesting and wonderful instruments from around the world, please indulge in further research and post your favorite 3-4 inspiring instruments in the form of jpegs attached to the google classroom assignment tab. Then add a comment (on the side bar) about 3-4 things that surprised you or things you learned while doing this research.

THE TASK:
- "PLAY" - create your own DIY Sound Scape experiments with "found sounds" that come from the everyday objects you have around the house. (Refer back to the brainstorm list you created on the "Musical Terminology" google doc.
- Find an object or objects that you can play for each of the following types of instruments:
1. Percussion/Rhythm
2. Wind (tonal)
3. String based sound.
- Discover (through experimentation & play) the range and/or variety of sounds you can make from each "instrument."
- Practice a little before making your 3 recordings (each one should be about 20 seconds include an introduction (your name, the object you are
playing and a 10-15 second demonstration of the sounds you can make)
- Record a Sound Bite for each of the following types of instrument (Label each sound recording with your name and the type of
"instrument" you are playing 1. Percussion/Rhythm, 2. Wind (tonal) , and 3. String based sound.

Embellishment & Final Instrument
Practice your Performance (group activity)
THE TASK: "The Jam Session"
- Coordinate a time to do a google meeting (with all 3 or 4 group members and their completed instruments)
- Decide on a "band name"- write it in the comments when you post your recording.
- Each person will need to spend some time demonstrating their instrument and the variety of sounds it can make. * This should be collaborative- give each other feed back and suggestions "play it louder, faster, with a pause here or
there, try moving the placement of you hand and see how it affects the sound, etc". - that kind of thing
- When you are comfortable, with a sound or beat that you can play consistently, try letting each group member layer on a sound. This should be spontaneous and fun- don't take yourselves too seriously, but do keep at it until you
get something interesting sounding.
-Record your "jam session " using the record button on Google Meets (2-3 minutes) When you stop the recording
and end the meeting it will process the video and save it to a file in Google Drive.
- The person who recorded or "hosted" the meeting is also responsible for posting the recording on this classwork
tab.
- LABLE the recording with Each person's name (first name and last initial) for easy grading.
* If time permits we will "perform" for the class in our final zoom meeting. I suggest at least one more practice session prior to that meeting. Share the recording with each other so you can rehearse and embellish your part.

Submit your Final Ensemble- We will plan to do this on Zoom (and) make a recording of your practice to post for the class & Assignment Tab
